The F-Pattern and What It Costs

In 1997, usability researcher Jakob Nielsen published an eye-tracking study showing how people actually read web pages. The pattern was shaped like the letter F: a horizontal sweep across the top, a second shorter sweep further down, then a vertical scan down the left edge.

Nearly thirty years later, the F-pattern is still how most people consume online text — and research consistently shows it leaves critical gaps. Readers using F-pattern scanning retained on average 40–60% less information than readers who moved through content deliberately. They missed qualifications, counterarguments, and context that changed the meaning of what they thought they understood.

The irony is that skimming feels efficient. You cover more pages in less time. You feel informed. But the information you absorb is systematically biased toward the first sentence of each paragraph and whatever words appear in bold or after a header — which is exactly what content farms optimize for.

Why We Skim Anyway

Online reading conditions actively encourage skimming. Pages are long, notifications arrive constantly, and the infinite scroll means there is always more to read immediately below. The brain learns to deprioritize depth because depth carries an opportunity cost.
