Reading Online with Migraines and Light Sensitivity: Browser Settings That Help
Specific browser and extension settings that reduce the visual triggers most likely to aggravate migraines and photophobia — contrast, brightness, motion, and font choices.
Migraine affects roughly one in seven adults, and for most people who experience it, screens are among the most reliable aggravators. Light sensitivity (photophobia) is a symptom that persists between attacks for many people, which means reading online is a daily background difficulty — not just something to manage during an episode.
This guide covers the settings and tools that make the most practical difference, and why each one helps.
Start with brightness, not colour
The instinct when light hurts is to reach for dark mode or night mode. That helps, but brightness — set in your operating system or monitor controls — is the faster and more significant change.
Most displays run at 200–300 nits by default, which is comfortable in a bright room but far more than you need in a dim one. Dropping to 80–120 nits eliminates a large portion of the photons your eyes are processing before you change anything else. Do this first.
Colour temperature (“warm” vs. “cool” light) matters more for sustained use and sleep disruption than for acute photosensitivity. Blue-light filtering is useful for long reading sessions; it has a less direct relationship with migraine threshold than overall luminance.
Choose mid-contrast dark mode, not high-contrast
Here is a finding that regularly surprises people: pure white text on a pure black background (#FFF on #000) is not the most comfortable dark mode for photophobia. For many people with light sensitivity, the extreme luminance contrast causes text to appear to glow — a halation or irradiation effect where bright letters seem to bleed into the dark surround.
A more comfortable option is mid-contrast dark mode: off-white text (around #E0E0E0 or #D4D4D8) on a very dark but not pure-black background (around #1A1A1A or #1E1E2E). The contrast ratio remains well above the WCAG AA threshold of 4.5:1, so readability is preserved — but the extreme differential that produces halation is reduced.

Reduce motion
After brightness, motion is the most consistent visual migraine trigger. This includes:
- Auto-playing video (especially in peripheral vision while you’re reading)

Chrome and most browsers respect the prefers-reduced-motion CSS media query when it is enabled in your operating system:

- ChromeOS: Settings → Accessibility → Display and magnification → Reduce animation

Font and spacing adjustments
During a migraine, or for ongoing photosensitivity, certain typographic choices become more important:
Font size. Larger text means fewer eye movements per line, which reduces the rapid saccadic motion that can aggravate headaches. 18–22px is a reasonable target during an acute episode; 16–18px for ongoing low-sensitivity reading.
Line height. Tight leading forces precise eye tracking. Setting line height to 1.6–1.8 creates more visual separation between lines and reduces the effort of staying on the correct one.

Font choice. High-stroke-contrast serif typefaces — where thin strokes and thick strokes are very different in weight — can be harder to read under photophobia.
