Reading Online With Aging Eyes: Presbyopia, Contrast, and What Actually Helps

Presbyopia, glare sensitivity, and reduced contrast perception change how comfortable reading online is after your 40s. Here's what's happening and how to adjust for it on any website.

Most guides to reading accessibility online focus on dyslexia, ADHD, or conditions people are diagnosed with. But there’s a much larger group of readers who quietly find text harder to read every year for a much more ordinary reason: getting older. The eye changes involved are well understood, predictable, and — unlike a lot of vision conditions — they affect nearly everyone eventually. This guide covers what’s actually changing, and which adjustments make the biggest practical difference.

Presbyopia: the focusing problem almost everyone gets

Presbyopia is the gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects, caused by the lens inside the eye stiffening with age. It’s not a disease and it doesn’t mean something has gone wrong — it’s a normal part of aging that becomes noticeable for most people somewhere in their 40s, continuing to progress into their 60s.

The practical effect for reading is familiar to anyone who’s experienced it: text that used to be perfectly legible starts to look blurry up close, especially in dim light or at the end of a long day. Holding a phone or book farther away, or needing reading glasses for the first time, is usually presbyopia showing up rather than a sign of a separate eye condition.

Presbyopia specifically affects near focus — it doesn’t make text itself lower-contrast or smaller. That distinction matters, because the fix that helps most (larger, more spaced-out text) is different from what would help with the contrast-related changes below.

Contrast sensitivity drops with age too

Separately from focusing power, the ability to distinguish subtle differences between similar shades — contrast sensitivity — also declines with age, even in eyes with no diagnosed disease. Light gray text on a white background, thin fonts, and low-contrast color schemes that a 20-year-old might read without noticing can become genuinely harder to parse decades later, independent of how good someone’s glasses prescription is.

This is part of why WCAG’s color contrast requirement sets a minimum ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text — it’s not an arbitrary number, it’s set with exactly this kind of age-related and low-vision contrast loss in mind. A site that technically has “readable” text at full attention and good lighting can still fall below what a lot of readers actually need.

Glare becomes a bigger problem too

The lens and other structures inside the eye also scatter light more with age, which shows up as increased sensitivity to glare — bright screens, glossy displays, and high-brightness white backgrounds become more uncomfortable and more likely to wash out text, especially in bright rooms or direct light. This is a big part of why older readers often prefer dimmer screens, warmer color tones, or a darker background rather than white-on-white browsing, even when their underlying visual acuity is otherwise fine.

Beyond normal aging: when it’s a bigger vision change

Presbyopia and reduced contrast sensitivity are near-universal and not something to be concerned about on their own. But some age-related eye conditions — most commonly age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, and glaucoma — cause more significant vision loss and are worth having checked by an eye doctor rather than adjusted around. Blurry central vision, dark or distorted patches, or a sudden change in vision are reasons to get an eye exam, not just a font size increase.

  1. Increase font size well beyond what feels necessary at first. Many people undercorrect out of habit; going noticeably larger than a site’s default is usually more comfortable than it looks at first glance.
  2. Boost contrast rather than assuming default text is fine. Pure black on pure white isn’t always the answer either — some readers do better with a slightly off-white or soft background, since it’s the ratio between text and background that matters, not stark black-and-white.

Doing all of this without reconfiguring every website

The adjustments above are simple individually, but resetting them on every new site you visit adds up to real friction — friction that tends to mean people just stop bothering and put up with text that’s harder to read than it needs to be.
